Please see the description of various digital audio interfaces in the Bad xlink 'digital_interfaces' section of the OSS User's Guide.
The future of this interface is uncertain. It's far too complicated to be used in programs and (in particular) it's too complicated to be implemented in all drivers. For the time being don't use this interface.
The SNDCTL_DSP_READCTL and SNDCTL_DSP_WRITECTL ioctl calls belong to this interface.
