This flag is used to mark mixer controls (usually sliders) that control the recording level. Simple mixer applet programs may use this flag to pick only the controls that are used for recording level.
Note that some devices have no recording volume controls at all. Some devices have one of them. However it's very common that there are multiple recoring level controls. Having multiple recording volume controls usually means that te device has several recording engines.
