Some mixer devices will have so large number of controls that every possible method for conserving screen space should be used. This mixer device capability suggests that mixer control names and enum control values should be shown in as narrow form as possible (even it means that the strings may get truncated on the screen).
Mixer device capabilities like MIXER_CAP_NARROW can be checked using the SNDCTL_MIXERINFO ioctl call.
