The MIDI device is some kind of virtual device that uses software methods to produce sound from the MIDI data written to the device. In some special cases virtual devices may be used for input too.
Applications should not use this capability to reject virtual MIDI devices. They have equal features than ordinary "hardware" MIDI devices.
MIDI device capabilities like MIDI_CAP_VIRTUAL can be checked using the SNDCTL_MIDIINFO ioctl call.
